An Hour A Day

Michael Lopp posted over at Rands in Repose about a new goal for himself:

Starting at the beginning of February, I made a change. Each day I blocked off a precious hour to build something.

Every day. One hour. No matter what.

Every day? Yup. Including weekends.

A hour? Yup, 60 full minutes. More if I can afford it.

I like it. I like it a lot. Knowing full well that I am going to fail at this consistently (having a 7 month-old will do that for you), I’m going to try and start setting aside an hour a day to actually build something.

Not just think about it, but actually build something. I can do the “thinking” part, but I need to get better at the “building” part.

An hour a day.

Just watch the product videos. This looks like a lot of fun.

I’m imagining a classroom of iPod Touches and the hijinks that would ensue.

Changing a Light Bulb

We bought a new lamp for our porch, but a standard CFL light bulb (60w equivalent) sticks out over the top of the lamp shade.

While it looks kind of cool, that feeling will fade.

So I looked around for some smaller light bulbs to use in the lamp and I decided to give an LED bulb a shot. So I headed over to Amazon and settled on the EarthLED ZetaLux 2 Pro 7-Watt Warm White LED Light Bulb.

It’s on order and headed to our home here for Wednesday. The big test will be what my wife thinks of the light it gives off. She is a huge fan of the incandescent bulbs, and I tend to agree with her. I’m hoping that it will be close enough that we can slowly start introducing LED bulbs around the house as the price comes down.

I’ll report back later.

Readability or Instapaper

Readability is now available on the App Store. I’ve been an Instapaper user for a while now and I was entertaining the idea of trying out Readability just to see what all of the “hubbub” might be about.

However, I’m sticking with Instapaper, and the reason is simple.

  • Instapaper is not free

I’m not talking about the website, I’m talking about the iOS apps. By not being free, I have some “skin in the game”, a sense that it is going to be around and going to treat me better.

In the future I might try out Readability, but for now, Instapaper is still it.

Classroom Seating for Today

Thanks to Nate Beran for pointing me at this video.

It is node by Steelcase and it is just about exactly what I would wish for seating in a classroom today. Flexible, designed with technology in mind, it moves, and you can store stuff below the seat and it comes with you. SUCH A GREAT IDEA!
