Twitter Going Crazy

Marco Arment has it pegged.

This line “says” it all:

We’ve summarized the program’s verticals along with example functionality to indicate features that businesses and Twitter find interesting. As new opportunities surface, we’ll continue to add new areas to these definitions.

What is Twitter even trying to say with this? This is nothing more than an impenetrable block of text meant to confuse and frustrate people. I can’t think of a single developer who could read this and be excited about the future of Twitter.

Data Reseller Products? What the … !?

If you want to try and read more about the Twitter Certified Products Program … good luck.

Best Case Scenario for the Mac

With Apple’s announcement that Craig Federighi has been named a Senior Vice President, fans of the Mac should breathe a little bit easier today. He is now on equal footing with Scott Forstall on the organizational level and is a sign of Apple’s dedication to pushing the Mac software scene forward just as it has in the past.

Worst Case Scenario for Apple Retail

If this report by MacRumors is true, Apple could be in for a slow downfall.

The retail stores are one of the best tools Apple has in its portfolio right now, and doing ANYTHING to weaken the customer experiences in those stores is going to be bad for the company overall. The fact that people are citing Tim Cook as one of the people behind the push for profits instead of the customers is even more concerning because you have to extrapolate where else Tim might take this same approach in the company.

All this means is that everyone should keep a close eye on Apple for where it is putting its emphasis. Tim Cook has a great thing going right now, but it can easily fall apart if he is not careful.

A Job Mostly Done

Another short update on the big farm project. Mainly, two images of the main heavy equipment work completed.

You get a good look at the old barn site as it sits now … pretty much empty. Off to the left you will see the remnants of a failed grape experiment, which is the next thing to go (the start of that project was rained out this past weekend). This is the site where the machine shed will hopefully start going up this winter.

Here you get a look at the other side where two pole sheds currently sit. There used to be the foundation for an old hay barn here, but no longer. The semi sits on a concrete slab at the moment and it is actually leveled off instead of a drop off where the dirt had settled over the years. What is going to happen with this area is still up for discussion, but more-than-likely some small cattle operation will be using at least one of the two sheds here which would mean that my dad, brother and I will be reprising our roles of putting up electric fence in the future.

Clearing out the weeds was a huge undertaking and there is still a lot of work left to clean everything up and plant in some grasses to keep the weeds away (and provide foliage for the cattle). That will be for another time. It is a good thing that my dad saved the old disk because that thing will be getting dragged through his area so that the better one can be saved for the fields.

The Role of the Web

I’ll start by confessing that I have never build a non-trivial application in my life. I’ve mainly worked on creating websites for people and working with HTML and CSS with some Ruby/Python/PHP thrown in.

However, as I contemplate building a non-trivial application, I’m debating where to start and what role the web will take.

Basically: do I build Twitter or Instagram? Hear me out.

If I build Twitter, I build the entire client on the web first. That’s where I start. After I have that squared away, then I could move onto other clients using an API.

Building Instagram, I’d build the native applications first and the web would be the saving and transport mechanism. I might return later to build a web client, but I’d be using IP networking mainly to transport bits to a server so that it could be shared with others.

That’s the mental problem I am working with right now along with learning how to code within iOS. It is a fun argument to have in my head.
